Leather Fashion Acessories

Saturday & Sunday, 30 & 31 January, 10.30- 4.30pm

This course offers the opportunity to explore a wide range of construction and finishing techniques, as well as work on a project of your own design.

You will learn how to:

  • make your own pattern
  • machine sew leather
  • add buckles, studs, poppers and eyelets
  • apply surface decoration and stitching
  • make your own leather fashion accessory

Silkscreen printing - INTRODUCTORY LEVEL

Saturday & Sunday, 20 & 21 February, 10.30- 6.30pm
This two day introductory course led by contemporary silkscreen printer Hazel Stark takes you step-by-step through basic printing techniques and processes enabling you to create your own designs with simple materials you can continue to use at home.

 

Working with organic textiles and water-based inks, you will experiment and create samples with Hazel's assistance, going on to design a final project for your home or clothing project during the second day

You will learn to:

  • mix colours with pigment and binders
  • cut simple hand blocks for stamping designs
  • use found objects within resist printing
  • making hand-cut paper stencils and use drawing fluid and screen filler to create direct block-out stencils.

Silkscreen printing - INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Saturday & Sunday, 6 & 7 March, 10.30- 6.30pm

Silkscreen printer Hazel Stark returns with this intermediate course, for those who want to continue from our introductory level course or those of you with a little previous printing experience.

 

During this weekend workshop you will explore further silkscreen printing techniques enabling you to plan and design larger projects that you can continue to print at home. On this course you will:

  • learn techniques including foiling, using aqua suede and mixing discharge pastes for natural textiles
  • explore hand-drawn repeat pattern design and work with semi-permanent stencils
  • look at how to register and use an adapted 'stops' technique for multiple colour printing at home.
  • use these advanced techniques to produce samples and go on to plan larger projects you can continue to print

Fashion Sewing

Love fashion but haven't sewn since school? This is for you!

These short courses are aimed at beginners and those with rusty sewing experience, and will take you through the process of making up a simple skirt.
You will:

  • become familiar with hand-stitching techniques for preparing a garment to be sewn
  • practice using a sewing machine, including how to put in a zip
    master four different types of hems
  • make a pattern from a simple block
  • learn how to take accurate measurements
  • work through the process of cutting out, constructing and finishing a skirt

Fabulous fascinators!

Saturday & Sunday, 20 & 21 February, 10.30- 4.30pm

 

During this fun and creative weekend led by couture milliner Judy Bentinck you will be introduced to a variety of techniques showing you how to produce all sorts of fascinators and headpieces.

 

This practical course is suitable for beginners, and will introduce you to a variety of techniques for creating headpieces to your own design. Please bring with you ideas, either your own designs or something you have seen in a magazine, hat shop or even a costume book.

You will learn how to:

  • make your own fascinator base from scratch
  • explore design and the use of colour
  • work with millinery fabrics, veiling, combs and headbands
  • experiment with feathers, trimmings and traditional millinery stitches

How to make a handbag

Saturday & Sunday 27 & 28 March, 10.30 - 5.30

Katherine Pogson takes you through the process of constructing your own handbag design, from creating the design to making up the finished article. Choose from evening or weekend versions of this extremely popular subject - suitable for beginners.

 

You will learn how to:

  • Make an accurate pattern
  • Attach linings and facings
  • Add pockets and handles and zips
  • Apply metal fittings such as clasps, eyelets and magnets

Metal Jewellery for begginers

Saturday & Sunday, 23 & 24 January, 10.30- 4.30pm

 

In this short weekend course suitable for beginners, led by award winning jeweller Sally Lees you will be introduced to a wide range of jewellery and metal-working techniques and have the opportunity to create your own contemporary designs in wire, aluminium and silver.

 

 

You will learn to:

  • design a piece of jewellery
  • cut, file, solder and anneal sheet metal including silver
  • experiment with wire

Customise your clothes

Saturday & Sunday, 13 & 14 March, 10.30- 4.30pm

Customise your clothesBrazilian British fashion designer Lena Santana introduces you to her world of reinvention, and shares some of her professional tips. This goes way beyond simply adding a few sequins and trims!

Learn to look at familiar garments through new eyes, and to deconstruct, embellish and transform them into intriguing new pieces. Bring in some of your own clothes to work on - a dress that needs to be cut up, tucked in, adapted or added to - and record your progress with a camera, to create your own research library of ideas to take away with you too.

Saturday will concentrate on sewing techniques. You will practice various hand and machine-sewing methods including how to put in a zip, four different types of hems, and how to take accurate measurements to adapt a basic pattern to your own size.

Sunday will focus on customising the garments you have brought in to create fresh ones.

Fashion dressmaking & draping, Intermediate level

8 Wednesdays 13 January - 3 March 6.30pm- 9.00pm
This fashion dressmaking course led by fashion designer Lena Santana is ideal for those people who have attended one of our introductory sewing courses or already have a little previous sewing know- how.
During the eight weeks, Lena will help you to perfect your basic sewing skills, and demonstrate the concept of draping on the stand, enabling you to create your own patterns and garments.

You will:

  • Perfect existing sewing skills
  • Create shape with darts and seams, add waistbands, button holes and pockets to garments
  • Learn the basic concept of draping using a dummy
  • Transfer draping on a stand to paper, to create your own patterns
  • Make a lined dress, a top and/or tailored pocket dress
